A member of a nation who owes allegiance to its government and is entitled to its protection enjoys “citizenship” in that particular nation. In the United States of America, citizenship is conferred upon individuals either by birth or by naturalization. Some rights of US citizenship include the right to vote, the right to live and work in the United States, and the right to petition for immediate family members to immigrate to the US. Some duties of citizenship include allegiance to and and defense of the Constitution and payment of taxes.
