United States immigration officials have begun the process of building a 2,200 bed immigration detention center within 120 miles of Los Angeles. Immigration and Customs enforcement can currently house 32,000 immigration detainees across the country, with 1,400 of them staying in a Los Angeles county facility. US Immigration closed the San Pedro detention facility in 2007.
