A former resident of Belarus, now a US permanent resident living in New Jersey, recently plead guilty to federal extortion charges stemming from threats he made when his company unexpectly laid him off. Now, not only does he face jail time and a possible $250,000 fine, by he could lose his LPR status and be deported because of the plea.

The New Jersey Supreme Court has been asked to decide whether an immigration detainer can be used as a factor to increase bail in state criminal court.
