Rosario Gambino, a member of one of New York’s five mafia families, was deported from the United States on Friday. Gambino, who served 22 years in federal prison on herion trafficking charges, left the United States from Miama, US immigration officials said. Gambino was arrested by Italian officials upon his arrival in Italy on an outstanding warrant. A Los Angeles immigration judge had previously blocked his deportation based on the UN Convention Agaist Torture (CAT) finding that he would be arrested and subject to questioning about the Sicilian Mafia upon his return to Italy. The Italian government considers him a member of the Mafia.
