In order to become a citizen of the United States, an applicant must first meet specific naturalization requirements. First, in order to become a citizen, the applicant must be a US lawful permanent resident (LPR) green card holder for a specified number of years and have been physically present in the US for roughly half of that time. Other citizenship requirements include good moral character, basic knowledge of English and the ability to pass the US history and government exam.
